ఈ మథ్య ఇద్దరు, ముగ్గురు మిత్రులు
హిందీ గురించిన ఒక చిన్న సంభాషణ తర్వాత ఈ విషయం గురించి రాద్దామనుకున్నను. ఫలాన వ్యక్తికి/వ్యక్తులకి హిందీ కుడా సరిగ్గా రాదు అనేది సంభాషణ. హిందీ కొంచెమే వచ్చిన వారికి ఛాలెంజ్ లు - నెల రోజుల్లో నేర్చుకోని మాట్లాడమనో, లేదా తప్పులు లేకుండా
ఓ వాక్యం మాట్లాడమనో. జరిగిన సంఘటనలు చెప్పడం కోసమేగాని, ఎవరినీ నొప్పించ ఉద్దేశంతో వ్రాసింది కాదు అని గమనించగలరు.
పర భాష తో కష్టాల గురించి సరదా అంశాలు ఇటీవల వ్రాశాను. అయితే ఇలా వచ్చీ రాని భాష తో సహాయం దొరక్కపోగా కొంతమంది చాలా అవహేళని గురయిన వాళ్ళని కూడా నేను చూశాను.
హైదరాబాదులో ఉన్న వారిలో చాలా మందికి హిందీ చాలా సునాయాసంగా వస్తుంది. పిల్లలకి స్కూల్ లో నేర్పుతారు, ఫ్రెండ్స్ నుంచి కూడా నేర్చేసుకుంటారు. చాలా మందికి భాష వస్తుంది కాని యాస మారదు. హిందీ మాట్లాడినా తెలుగు లా వినబడుతుంది. భయ్యా తప్ప మిగితా పదాలు తడబడకుండా మాట్లాడలేరు.
భాష తెలుసు కాని, మట్లాడేటప్పుడు, తెలుగులోకి అనువాదం చేస్కోని తిరిగి హిందీ లోకి తర్జుమా చేసేప్పటికి భాష తెలిసిన
అవతల వాళ్ళు ఏదో ఒక తుంటరి మాటతో సగం కాన్ఫిడెన్స్ దెబ్బ తీసేస్తారు. దీంతో భాష వచ్చినా రాదనే నమ్మకమే బల పడుతుంది.
చాలా సులభమైన భాష,
పాటలు వినీ వినీ నా
మనసుకి చాలా దగ్గరగా ఉన్న
భాష. హిందీ వస్తే చాలు, దేశంలో
చాలా ప్రాంతాల్లో సునాయాసంగా భాష తిప్పలు లేకుండా ఉండచ్చు.
ఆఫీసులో, స్నేహితుల్లో చాలా మంది నన్ను అడిగారు, మీరు హిందీ బాగా
ఎలా మట్లాడుతారు అని, హైదరాబాదులో చాలా
రోజులున్నాను, అలా వచ్చేసింది అని
మాట దాటేస్తుంటాను. కానీ అది నిజం కాదు.
కాలేజీ లో ఉన్నప్పుడు
హిందీ సినిమా కి వెళ్తే ఫ్రెండ్స్
నన్ను మథ్యలో కుర్చోబెట్టేవారు, సినిమా డైలగులు తెలుగులో తర్జుమా చేయడం కోసం. అక్కడ
విని, పక్కన తర్జుమా చేయడం లో ఒక్కోసారి నాకు
డైలాగులు వినడం కుదిరేది కాదు. అందుకే అలా మిస్ అయిన డైలాగ్స్
వినడానికి కహో నా ప్యార్ హై అనే సినిమా రెండో సారి అమ్మ నాన్న తో వెళ్ళాను.
స్కూల్లో చాలా చక్కగా హిందీ
రాయగలిగినా, బాగానే చదవగలిగినా కూడా, కానీ యాస మారలేదు.

ఉందని హేళన చేసేవారు కొందరు

లో గెలిచాను. గెలుపు చిన్నదే అయినా అప్పుడు అది నాకు చాలా
ఎక్కువ. హిందీ మాతృభాషగా గల పోటీ దారుల్లో గెలిచిన
తెలుగు అమ్మాయిని కాబట్టి.
ఇలా నడుస్తుండగా కొన్నాళ్ళకి
TV ప్రపంచలో ఒక ఇతిహాసం అయినటువంటి,
క్యూ కి సాస్ భీ
కభీ బహూ థీ, కవున్
బనేగా కరోడ్పతి అనే రెండు programs

అని నాకు భాష మీద
మరింత పట్టు వచ్చింది.
అలా అలా ఇప్పుడు
నన్ను కొంతమంది నేను హిందీ మాట్లాడడం విని నేను - సౌత్ ఇండియా నుంచి వచ్చానంటే నమ్మలేకపోతున్నాం, నార్త్ ఇండియన్ అనుకున్నాం - అనేంత వరకూ.., తిరిగి నా భాష గురించి
హేళన చేసినవారిని వెనక్కి తిరిగి కూడా చూడనంత దూరం
వచ్చేశాను.
ఇలాగే మా వారు
మద్రాస్ స్కూల్ లో కొత్తగా చేరి,
భాష తెలీక, తోటి పిల్లలు తిట్టారని
తెలిసినా దాని అర్థం తెలీక,
తిరిగి మాట్లాడలేకపొయిన రోజులు. ఒక క్లాసు నుండి
ఇంకో క్లాసు కి మారే రెండు
నెలల వ్యవథి లో తమిళం మాట్లాడడం,
చదవడం కూడా నేర్చుకోని, ఆ
తిట్టిన వాళ్ళని (తమిళంలో తిట్టగలిగినా) తిట్టకుండా తిరిగి సమధానం తమిళం లోనే చెప్పగలిగారుట.
ఇప్పుడు తెలుగు, తమిళ, కన్నడ, హిందీ, ఇంగ్లీషు, ఓ అర ముక్క
గుజరాతీ కూడా మట్లాడగలరు.
మా అమ్మాయి స్కూల్ లో ఒక వృద్ధ British Trainer యొక్కEnglish session కి వెళ్ళాను. పిల్లల మీద American లేదా British ఇంగ్లీష్ accent వత్తిడి గురించి చెప్పారు. "ఇంట్లో మాతృ భాష లో కాకుండా ఇంగ్లీషులో మాట్లాడడం గురించీ, మరి ముఖ్యంగా ఇంగ్లీష్ accent గురించీ ఆందోళన చెందుతుంటారు", అని. అనగా R అక్షరం పలకాలంటే, నాలుక కింద పడి దొర్లాలి.. అనే చింత ఎక్కువ అన్నట్టుగా. (ఎక్కడో విన్నట్టుంది కదా 😉😄). “ఏ ప్రాంతం లో ఉంటే ఆ ప్రాంతం భాష, దాని యాస వస్తుంది, అది సహజం. భాష తెలీక పోవడమూ తప్పు కాదు, వేరే భాష యాసలో మట్లాడడం కూడా తప్పు కాదు. తాను బ్రిటన్ లో పుట్టి పెరగడం వల్ల అక్కడి భాష, యాస వచ్చాయి, కాని హైదరాబాదు లో ఉంటున్నా నాకు ఇంకా తెలుగు రాదు", అని చెప్పారు. "భాష రావడానికి అవకాశం, అవసరం ఉండాలి. భావ వ్యక్తీకరణ సరిగ్గా, మార్యాదగా ఉన్నంత వరకూ Accent/slang is not sin” అని ముగించారు.

I thought of writing this when I heard few of my colleagues talking about not knowing Hindi. Often I heard that some colleagues still cannot speak in Hindi followed by some Hindi learning challenges. Intent behind writing this is just to narrate few related incidents and not to hurt anyone.
I recently wrote fun stuff about difficulties with living in a place with other languages. But I also saw some people who were ridiculed in public for not being able to speak a language.
Most of the people in Hyderabad can speak Hindi fluently. Children are taught in school; they also learn from friends. Most people know the language but the accent does not change. Hindi is heard as if they are speaking in Telugu. Except for Bhaiya, they cannot speak the rest of the words in the sentence without hesitation.
The problem is that though they know the language, while speaking they need to gather all the words, to translate to in Hindi and then speak. But by then, their half confidence on the language will be broken by those who know the language and they tend to believe that they cannot speak the language little known.
I think Hindi is one of an easy language to learn. People who can speak Hindi can get along in most parts of India.
Many of my friends asked me how I speak Hindi well. I skip the question saying I have been living in Hyderabad for many years.
When I was in college, my friends would place me in the middle seat whenever we goto Hindi movie, so that I can translate film dialogues into Telugu. Sometimes I don’t get to hear the dialogues while I translate aside. I went to Kaho na pyar hain movie again with parents only to listen to such missed dialogues.
Though I can write and read Hindi very well in school, my Telugu accent hasn’t changed. There are some who mocked my Hindi as it was heard like Telugu. Then I started watching a Hindi TV serial called Tehkikat in DD. I started noticing how they speak, their accent and some new complex words. When I was in class 10 I won in high school essay writing competition in both Hindi and Telugu. This win is meant to me a lot because I am the only non-Hindi speaking girl, who won among the contestants whose mother tongue is Hindi.
While this is on, two mega shows in the history of National television were started - Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kaun Banega Crorepati. With Amitabh Bachchan’s dialect, accent, poetry, pronunciation and Smriti Irani’s dialogues, I got a grip on the language, that now when some heard me speak Hindi, they couldn’t believe I am from the South India and believed I am a North Indian. I’ve learnt to an extent that I did not even look back at those who had ridiculed my language.
Something similar happened with my husband too when he was new to Madras and new to school. He knew that his fellow students were abusive with him but could not understand and could not reply again. Within two months of holidays during summer before promoting to another class, he learnt to speak and read Tamil and was able to respond in Tamil. Now he can speak Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, English and even a half piece of Gujarati.
I got an opportunity to attend a British Trainer’s English session in my daughter’s school. He was talking about the pressure on children about American or British English accent. “Parents are more concerned about speaking in English rather than in the mother tongue at home, and worried especially about their English accent. (If the letter ‘R’ is to be pronounced, one should roll down the tongue on the floor to get that foreign accent, as heard somewhere recently 😉😄). Accent is based on the person’s place of living or hailing from and it is natural.
It is not wrong to knowing a language, nor the accent. He said that as he was born and raised in Britain, he got the language and the British accent, but even though he lives in Hyderabad, he still does not speak Telugu. One must have the opportunity and the need to learn a language. As long as the expression of words can be understood and respectful, accent/slang is not sin”, he concluded.
