జనవరి. 2014.

ఈసారి summer holidays కి కాశ్మీర్ అన్నాను. అంతా మౌనం. బాంబు పడినంత మాట చెప్పాను మరి. నేను చెప్పిన ప్రదేశం అలాటిది. కళ్ళ ముందు అందరికీ ఒక రీలు. బాంబులు, నిప్పు రవ్వలు, గొడవలు, ఇత్యాదులు. దేశానికి చిట్ట చివర, పైగా ఎప్పుడూ గొడవలు, కాల్పులు.

నేను ఈపాటికే చాలా విషయాలు కనుక్కున్నాను, భయపడాల్సింది ఏమీ లేదు అని సద్ది చెప్పాను. వారం లో టికెట్లు బుక్ అయిపొయాయి.  
April, 2014.
ప్రయాణానికి 2 రోజుల ముందు, అంతా మౌనం, అందరికీ ఒకటే ఆందోళన. దాదాపు టికెట్లు కాన్సిల్ చేయడానికి ఉపక్రమించా కూడా. ప్రతీ ట్రిప్ కి ముందు గుడికి వెళ్ళడం అలవాటు. ఈసారి కుడా ప్రయాణానికి ఒక రోజు ముందు ఉదయం ఆంజనేయ స్వామి గుడికి వెళ్ళి కాస్త గట్టిగా దణ్ణం పెట్టుకొచ్చా. క్షేమంగా వెళ్ళి క్షేమంగా రావాలని.    
     ఉదయం ఫ్లైట్ ఎక్కాం. మథ్యాహ్నం ఢిల్లీ లో ఇంకో ఫ్లైట్ మారి, శ్రీనగర్ ఫ్లైట్ ఎక్కాం. సుమారు ఒంటిగంటకి శ్రీనగర్ ఎయిర్పోర్ట్ చేరాం.  ఫ్లైట్ దిగింది మొదలు, ఒకటే చెక్కింగులు. ఒక్కొ బాగు, స్క్రీనింగ్ లో మాత్రమే కాదు, తవ్వి తవ్వి, కెలికి కెలికి మరీ చెక్ చేశారు. ఇక hand bagలయితే పూర్తిగా మనం బోర్లించాలి. చెకింగులు ముగించుకోని బయటికి రావడానికి 2 గంటలు పట్టింది. ఇక్కడ మనకి ఎక్కడపడితే అక్కడ చెత్తకుప్పలు, బురద వున్నంత casual గా అక్కడ రోడ్ల మీద మంచు కనబడుతుంది. ఇంటి కప్పులు ఏటవాలు గా ఉంటాయి. మంచు కురిస్తే జారి కింద పడిపోయే వీలుగా అలా కట్టుకుంటార్ట. హోటల్ చేరేసరికి సాయంత్రం 4. హోటలూ బాగుంది, వారి ఆతిథ్యం కూడా బాగుంది. మేము బస చేసింది గుజరాత్ వారి హోటల్ కావడంతో అక్కడ పూర్తిగా శాకాహారమే అన్నాడు receptionist. ఆ మాట విని కాస్త ఊపిరి పీల్చుకున్నాం.
Dal lake: 
       అలిసి పొయి వచ్చారు కాబట్టి, ఈపూట దాల్ లేక్ లో బోటు షికారు కి వెళ్ళి రండి, రేపు ఉదయం నుంచి మిగితా ప్రదేశాలు చూసే ఏర్పాటు చేస్తామన్నారు. బోటింగ్ అంటే, హైదరాబాద్ లో లుంబిని పార్కు లో మాదిరి అనుకున్నా... Roof top తో అందంగా అలంకరించిన ఒక బోటు ఎక్కించారు.. బోటు బానే ఉంది, ఇక కూచోని సరస్సులో దిక్కులు చూడడం అనుకున్నా.. కాని ఆ దాల్ లేక్ లో, boat shops వున్నాయి. అంటే, వేరే పెద్ద పెద్ద పడవులలో కష్మిరీ చీరలు, గిల్టు నగలు, హస్త కళ అమ్మకాలు.  మనం కొనుగోలు చేయాలంటే, మన పడవ నుంచి, ఆ పడవకి వెళ్ళి కొనాలి. కష్మిరీ సిల్కు చీరలు నిజంగా చాలా చవకగా చాలా బాగున్నాయి. కానీ రాగానే డబ్బులు వదిలించుకోడం ఎందుకు, ఇంకా కొద్ది రోజులు వుండాలి కదా అని ఆగాను.

సాయంత్రం 6 - 6:30 కి కూడా అక్కడ సుర్యాస్తమయం అవదు. సూర్యోదయం కూడా చాలా త్వరగా 6 లోపే అవుతుంది. మర్నాడు ఉదయం 9 కి breakfast చేస్కుని చుట్టుపక్కల కొన్ని కొన్ని ప్రాంతాలకి వెళ్ళాం. ముందుగా శంకరాచార్య వారి గుడి. వారు అక్కడ తపస్సు చేశారుట. తర్వాత అక్కడ రాజులు పాలించిన శిథిలావస్థ లో కోటలు, కుంకుమ పువ్వు చెట్లు, Apple తోటలు లాంటివి చూశాం.
Gulmarg:

 

ఉదయం 6 కి గుల్మార్గ్ కి బయలుదేరాం. గుల్మార్గ్ మంచు కొండ. రోప్ వే లో హిమాలయ మంచు కొండ మీద కి వెళ్ళాలి రావాలి. Gondola ride అంటారు. అద్భుతం!! చుట్టూ తెల్లని కొండలు. మన రోప్ వే cabin లో ఉంటే మన చుట్టు మంచు..  కొండ మీద కనుచూపుమేరలో ఎక్కడా నేల కనపడదు. పిల్లలు Snowman తయారుచెస్తూ కేరింతలతో ఆటలు.  పెద్దలు వచ్చీ రాని skiing 😊
Chinar:

దారిలో చినార్ చెట్లు. పేరుకి స్తూపమో, కట్టడమో అన్నట్టు ఉంది కదా. చినార్ చెట్ల నీడకి అసలు ఎలాంటి వ్యాధులూ రావుట. ఒక శిథిలమైన కోటలో gate keeper చినార్ చెట్టు కింద వుంటాడు. అతన్ని అడిగాను, అతనికి కనీసం జలుబు, దగ్గు కూడా రావుట. కాశ్మీరి బట్టల మీద designs కూడా చాలా వరకు చినార్ చెట్ల ఆకులను పోలి వుంటాయి. India లో చినార్ చెట్లు కేవలం కాశ్మీర్ లోనే కనబడతాయి. తర్వాత ఇజ్రాఇల్.
సాయంత్రం 6 కి హోటల్ చేరాం. సిటీ లోకి వెళ్ళీ వెళ్ళగానే శుభవార్త. Curfewట. నేను ముందే ఆలోచించి హోటల్ army camp దగ్గర తీస్కు న్నా. మా హోటల్ army camp వద్ద ఉండడం తో ఆ లైన్ లో మాత్రం curfew లేదుట. అనుకున్నంత పనీ అయింది. అడుగు పెట్టామో లేదో curfew. ఇంత దూరం వచ్చి ఇక్కడ కర్ఫ్యు లో ఇరుక్కున్నాం అనుకున్నాం. కాని, receptionist మీరు అనుకున్నవి చూసి, క్షేమంగా వచ్చేల ఏర్పాటు చేస్తాం అని భరోసా ఇచ్చారు. ఉదయం 6 కి బయలుదేరండి. మళ్ళీ సాయంత్రం 6 కి cityలోకి వచ్చేలా రండి. అప్పుడు మీకు ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బందులూ ఉండవని చెప్పారు.
Sonmarg:

 

మర్నాడు ఉదయం 6 కి సోన్మార్గ్ కి బయలుదేరాం. దారి పొడవునా మనతోనే వచ్చే ఒక సత్సర్ వాగు. నేల మీద ఎక్కడ పడితే అక్కడ మంచు ముద్దలు. సోన్మార్గ్ - మంచుకొండల మథ్యలో రోడ్డు. దళారీలు కొండమీద కి ఒక తోపుడు బండి లాంటి దాని మీద కుర్చోబెట్టి మంచు కొండ పైకి లాక్కెళ్తారు. చుట్టూ మంచు కొండలు, ఆకాశం తప్ప మరింకేమీ ఉండవు. అక్కడ చాలా సేపు గడపచ్చు. పైకి లాక్కొచ్చావ్ సరే, కిందకి ఎలా తీస్కెళ్తావ్ అని అడిగాం. Slope లో బండి కిందకి లాగడం కష్టం. మేము తీసుకెళ్ళం, మీరే వెళ్తారు అని, మమ్మల్ని మళ్ళీ ఆ బండి ఎక్కించి, మేము సరిగ్గా సద్దుకోని కూచునేలోపు, ఎత్తు నుంచి కిందకి తోశాడు. అంతే.......... ఆ slope లో మంచు లో, మంచి స్పీడు లో కొండ పైనుంచి కిందకి రయ్యిన వచ్చి పడ్డాం. వస్తున్నంత సేపు, మన చుట్టూ  మంచు మన మీద పడుతుంటుంది. అదో అద్భుతమైన experience. చుట్టూ snow కాబట్టి దెబ్బలు ఏం తగలవు.      
Tulips: 

 

          Kashmir లో ఆఖరి రోజు - వెంకటేష్ సినిమాల్లో చూసుంటాను Tulips ని. Netherlands లో Tulips ఎక్కువట. India లో కాశ్మీర్ లో మాత్రమే. కేవలం ఒకటి, రెండు నెలలు మాత్రమే పూస్తాయి. ఎకరాల ఎకరాల garden. అందులో ఎన్ని రకాల రంగు రంగుల Tulips బారులు  తీరి ఉన్నాయో లెక్కే లేదు.
కాశ్మీర్ గురించి కొన్ని అపోహలు-నిజాలు:
1. కాశ్మీరేతు సరస్వతీ.. అక్కడ  సరస్వతీ దేవి గుడి ఉండాలి, కనుక్కోమన్నారు  నాన్న. గూగుల్ చేస్తే, అది PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) లో ఉందని ఉంది. ఇప్పుడు అక్కడికి వీసా లు గీసాలు కష్టం. ఇక్కడినుంచే  🙏  అన్నాను. గతంలో కష్మిరి పండితులు దేశంలో వేరే ప్రాంతాలకి వలస వెళ్ళవలసినప్పుడు, కొంతమంది ముస్లిం సోదరులు వారి హిందూ సోదరులు ఇన్నాళ్ళుగా పూజించిన మందిరాలు వెల వెల పోతుండడం చూడలేక, వారే దొంగ చాటుగా గుళ్ళల్లో దీపం వెలిగించి వచ్చేవారని మా డ్రైవర్ చెప్పాడు.
2. శాకాహారం దొరకడం కష్టం – అనుకున్నాం. శాకాహారులు కావడంతో, పూర్తిగా bread and fruits తో రాబోయే 5 రోజులు గడపాలని బయలుదేరేముందు నిర్ణయించుకున్నాం. కాని, చల్లని ప్రదేశం కావడంతో, చాలా రోజులు నిల్వ ఉంచినవి వండుతారేమో అని, వాళ్ళు స్వతహాగా కూడా బయటికొస్తే శాకాహారం మాత్రమే తింటారుట. కొన్ని స్టార్ హోటల్స్ లో మాత్రమే మాంసాహారం దొరుకుతుంది. నేను అక్కడ వెళ్ళిన ప్రదేశాలలో దాదాపు అన్ని చోట్లా pure vegetarian బోర్డ్లు ఉన్నాయి.
3. Apples సంవత్సరం పొడుగునా పండవు. కాని, మనకి ఇక్కడ సంవత్సరం అంతా దొరుకుతాయి. ఆపిల్ పువ్వు పసుపు పచ్చ. మేము వెళ్ళేపాటికి చెట్లకి ఇంకా పూలే ఉన్నాయి. పంట అక్టోబర్, నవంబర్ లో వస్తుందిట. ఈలోపు అక్కడ apple దొరకదుట. మనకి సంవత్సరమంతా దొరుకుంతుంది అంటే అక్కడ జనాలు ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు. డజన్ apples రూ.50 కి అమ్ముతార్ట. మేము ఒకటి రూ. 30-40 కి కొంటాం అని చెప్పాను. మనకి ఇక్కడ ఇంటి ఇంటికీ జామ చెట్టు ఉన్నట్టు, అక్కడ apple చెట్టు ఉంటుంది.
4. Fairness క్రీముల్లో మనకి చెప్పే కుంకుమ పువ్వు మనకి తెలిసిన కుంకుమ పువ్వు ఒకటి కాదు. కుంకుమ పువ్వు పంట మన దేశం లో కాశ్మీరు లో మాత్రమే. పువ్వులో ఉన్న 2 కేసరాలు ఎరుపు, 3 కేసరాలు పసుపు పచ్చ. ఎరుపు కేసరాలు సుగంధ ద్రవ్యం గా అమ్ముతారు. మిగిలిన 3 కేసరాలు మాత్రం ఫెయిర్నెస్ క్రీముల తయారి కి అమ్ముతార్ట.  

5. నేను ఎక్కడా స్త్రీలని retail shopsలో అమ్మకాలు చేస్తూ చూడలేదు. కాని, Car driving చేస్తూ అయితే చాలా మంది ఆడవారు కనిపించారు. వారి regional traditional వేషధారణ లోనే చాలా మంది ఉన్నారు. చిన్న observation అంతే.
6.  సినిమా హాళ్ళు ఉండవు. ఎవరూ పెద్దగా సినిమాలకి వెళ్ళరుట. ఇప్పుడు మాత్రం కేబుల్ టీవీ లు వచ్చి పిల్లలు Sharukh Khan సినిమాలు చూస్తున్నారుట.
7.  సూర్యాస్తమయం సాయంత్రం 7 తర్వాత. సాయంత్రం 7 కి కుడా బాగా వెలుతురుగా ఉంటుంది.
8. అతిథి దేవోభవ: ఇక్కడ ప్రధాన ఆదాయం టూరిజం కాబట్టి ఇక్కడ టూరిస్టులను ఎవరూ ఏ హాని చేయరు. పెద్దవాళ్ళు ఇంటికొచ్చిన పిల్లలకి కాయో పండో చేతిలో పెట్టినట్టు, మా trip అయిపొయాక డ్రైవర్ మా అమ్మాయికి apricots చేతిలో పెట్టాడు. Curfew లో కూడా మేము చూడలనుకున్నవన్నీ చుసేందుకు మాకు వాళ్ళు సహకరించారు.
పైకి ఎంత ప్రశాంతంగా ఉంటుందో లోపల అంతే భగ భగా మంటలు. పైకి బావున్నంత మాత్రాన అంతా బావున్నట్టు కాదు అని కాశ్మీర్ ని తల్చుకుంటే అనిపిస్తుంది. ఎంతో భయపడుతూ వెళ్ళాం. కానీ కించిత్తు కూడా కష్టం లేకుండా తిరిగి వచ్చాం. 
నేను వెళ్ళిన అన్ని tourలలో, చూసిన అన్ని ప్రాంతాలలో – ఆనందం, అందం, అద్భుతం, ఆశ్చర్యం - కాశ్మీరం.
మరి మీకు బాగా గుర్తుండిపోయిన విహార యాత్రల గురించి నాక్కూడా చెప్పండి.

2014, January. 
“We are going to Kashmir this summer”, I declared.
Absolute silence!! Before the beauty of snowy moutains elated, a reel of fear, terror, Roja movie's second half rolled in front of the eyes for few seconds.
“I’ve already enquired, there’s nothing to worry about”, I concluded and stepped out. 
Within a week all bookings were done.
April, 2014.
2 days before the program, everyone are in mute. I almost thought of cancelling the tickets. I have a habit of visiting temple before each trip. This time too, a day before the journey, I visited Hanuman temple and offered strong prayers to reach back safe and sound from Kashmir.
Boarded the morning flight to Delhi and another flight to Srinagar from Delhi. Well, not only in the screening, airport staff almost dug through all our baggage. Hand bags had to be completely emptied for screening. It took 2 hours for the baggage screening; that's almost the time of a movie screening. We had that first sight of Srinagar while going to the hotel. As we see trash and mud everywhere on the roads here, we get to see snow there. The roofs of the houses are steep slopy. It is so, so that the snow slips from that slopy roof. We reached hotel by 4PM. 
As the travel was long, receptionist advised us to go to the boat ride in Dal Lake and then rest for the day.
Dal lake:
I thought boating would be similar to Lumbini Park boating in Hyderabad; get onto the roof top decorated boat and just see water all around and tiny people moving at a distance. 
But, it’s actually much more than that. There are boat shops all around. Kashmiri sarees, artificial jewellery, handicrafts, what not in the other large boats. If we want to buy, there is a wooden walkway laid to reach the other boat. Kashmiri silk sarees were really, really cheap. But I had to resist as I did not want to shell out all the money on the day-1. I don’t see sunset even at 6 - 6:30 PM. There is pale darkness at 7PM too. The sunrise is also pretty early, around 5:30 in the morning.We left at 9 am after breakfast and went to some of the surrounding site seeing locations, beginning with the temple of Sankaracharya. Later, remains of the forts of the kings, saffron trees and apple orchards.
Chinar:

Another attraction of Kashmir is Chinar all along the way. They say one wouldn’t fall sick due to shade of chinar trees. When asked asked the gate keeper of a dilapidated fort, he said he never had cold or coughs. The designs on Kashmiri fabrics also resemble the foliage of most Chinar trees. Chinar trees in India are found only in Kashmir.We reached the hotel at 6 in the evening and soon realized we landed in curfew. I thought much ahead of all these and booked the hotel near army camp. With our hotel staying at the army camp, there is no curfew in that line. But highly upset as it is difficult to tour further. Stuck this far from home 😒.
I must say, Kashmiris hospitality is just awesome. The receptionist assured us we will go back only after the tour is complete. He suggested that we need to get out at 6AM. Come back to the city after 6 pm to avoid the trouble. This seem to be just a norm for them. They did not panic a bit on hearing curfew. Receptionist was as cool as the place. 😊
Gulmarg:

 

We left for Gulmarg at 6am. Gulmarg, a Snow Hill. We need to take a rope way, called Gondola ride to reach the snow point. As we proceed to the uphill it’s just snow all around. A Wonder indeed !! White hills all around. I saw kids making snow man and adults trying skiing hard.
Sonmarg:

 

We left for Sonmarg at 6 AM. It's a treat for eyes. Satsar lake comes with us all along the way on one side and the snow topped hills on the other side. A cart was hired and the cart agent accompanied, rather pulled us on the cart up the hill. You just see nothing but the snowy hills and the sky around. Spent a lot of time there. We asked cart driver if he can pull us back down along, while trying to comfort ourselves on the cart to return, it is difficult to pull the cart along such a steep snowy slope. “We wouldn’t pull you mam, this time we’ll push you”. Saying this he pushed us from the top of the hill, even before we could hear him completely That's all.......... from a slopy, snowy height, with a good velocity we rammed down the snow hill’s bed. It was indeed a wonderful experience.
Tulips:

 

Last day in Kashmir – I’ve seen Tulips only in South Indian actor, Venkatesh’s movies(The Anari fame in Bollywood). Tulips are mostly said to be found in Netherlands and in India, only in Kashmir. They bloom only for one or two months. It was a laaarge garden of Tulips in rows and countless varieties of colours.
Myths and realities of Kashmir.
1. Kashmiretu Saraswati .. “There should be a Shakti Peeth-Saraswati Devi temple here”, said my father. 
 I Googled, and it is actually in PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir). 
 “That requires Pakistani Visa”, I replied. Mute!!  Years back, when Kashmiri pandits had to migrate to other parts of the country, some Muslim brothers sneaked into the temples to to keep the sanctity of the shrine, for the sake of their Hindu friends who worshipped there all through life, said my driver. I was soo moved to hear this. 
2. Vegetarian food is hard to find. No.. Being a vegetarian, while boarding the flight, 
 we’ve decided to live on bread and fruits, the next 5 days. 
 But, I have realized that being a cold place, they prefer to eat vegetarian, 
 as they are suspicious that the meat served could have been stored for a long. 
 Only a few star hotels serve non-vegetarian. 
 Almost everywhere we have been we found vegetarian food courts. 
3. Apples do not grow throughout the year. 
 But, we can buy them all throughout the year because they are from cold storage. 
 Apple’s flower is yellow. The harvest comes in the months of October and November. 
 Dozen apples sell for Rs. 50 there, while we spend Rs. 30-40 here for one. 
 It’s very common to see an apple tree in the house backyard as we see Guava trees here.
4. Saffron:  If fairness creams claim saffron in them, then don’t believe. 
   Saffron harvest is only in Kashmir in our country. 

   The 2 stamens in the flower are red, the 3 stamens are in yellow. 
   Red stamens are sold as a spice. The remaining 3 stamens are sold to fairness cream manufacturing units. 
5. I have never seen women at the cash counter in retail stores. 
   For that matter, no single female employee anywhere except in the airport. 
   But, there were many women driving cars. 
   And most of them are dressed in their regional traditional attire. 
   Just an observation that they take pride in their culture. 
6. No movie theaters. And they live without watching movies. 
   There are hardly any, rather no movie theaters. Off late cable TV is finding small place in the homes. 
7. Sunsets after 7PM. It is well lit at 7 pm too.
8. Athithi Devobhava: The main source of income here is tourism, 
   so tourists are less likely to be harmed here. 
   While dropping us back to the airport, the driver handed a packet of apricots to my 
   daughter, just as elders in the family do, while we leave from home. They helped us immensely to see everything we wanted to see during the curfew.

   We went with immense fear. But we returned without a pin point of difficulty. 

  Of all the tours and the places I have visited - Kashmir will be the most memorable and a beautiful wonder. An Eden indeed.
